Installing Solar PV Panels in Scotland - FAQ's

Solar Panels ScotlandSolar Panels enable you to generate cheap  green electricity from sunlight to power your home and appliances. They capture energy from sunlight and convert it into electricity.

Solar panels don't need direct sunlight. So even in a country with a climate like Scotland substantial savings can be made by reducing domestic energy bills.

Any surplus electricity generated by your solar panels can be sold at a profit back to your energy company via the UK Government’s Feed-in Tariff scheme.

How do solar panels work?

Solar electricity systems capture energy from the sun using solar photovoltaic panels (solar PV). The sun's light rays are then converted to electricity to power your home appliances & lighting.

Why is installing solar panels beneficial?

You can make substantial savings by generating your own electricity. This subsidises the electricity you have to purchase from your energy supplier which means a reduction in your bills. Any surplus power can then be metered and sold back to the power grid. Current Solar Feed-in tariffs for Scotland can be found here - Solar FIT from April 2016.

Is my property suitable for a solar panel installation?

It is recommended that your property is predominantly south-facing (South, South West, South East) with no shaded areas for maximum power yield from your solar electricity system.  Your roof tilt will also have a bearing on the energy you generate with your panels although most roofs in Scotland have a tilt angle between 30 & 45 degrees, which is suitable for most solat installers.

16 panel systems are more profitable but a 12 panel solar electric system generates ample energy to make the installation profitable.

Will I need planning permission to install solar PV panels?

It is advisable to contact your local council to check whether or not you need planning permission. But in most circumstances as long as you remain within the recommended size / installation guidelines you won't need planning permission for a solar panel installation.

Is any maintenance required?

Solar panels require very little ;maintenance due to their position on your roof. They are self-cleaning and any bird droppings etc are generally washed away by natural rainfall. Some installers recommend s new inverter every 25 years.

How much do solar panels cost?

The cost of a solar PV installation in Scotland has fell somewhat over the last few years. For a 4kWp system you should expect to pay £4995. This may vary slightly depending on specific installation requirements. You can get a set amount for each unit (kilowatt hour or kWh) of electricity you generate. The rates vary depending on:

  • the size of your system
  • which type of solar panel technology you install
  • when your system was installed
  • the energy efficiency level of your home
Solar Export tariff
You can also sell any units you don't use back to your electricity supplier. This is called the export tariff. The current rate is 4.85p per unit. You can find a complete guide to current Solar Panel Feed-in tariff rates at the OFGEM website.

Solar Panels in Scotland

Although there has been a recent reduction in the solar energy Feed-In tariff there is still a worthwhile profit to be made by having a solar panel powered electricity system installed in Scotland.

Solar panels use a Photovoltaic ( PV) process which generates electricity using light.. It does not have to be hot or even warm for the system to work. As long as your home is facing in the correct direction the solar panels convert light to electricity during daylight hours.
