Free cavity wall insulation in Scotland can be claimed through a new home energy efficiency scheme. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which is Government led, is designed to lower carbon emissions.
It also helps Scottish households deemed to live in “fuel poverty” lower the cost of heating their homes.
Installing cavity wall insulation and loft insulation is one of the most effective ways of reducing energy costs.
Currently cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are free for many people in the private sector (home owners, private tenants and landlords). What is cavity wall insulation?
Cavity wall insulation is a material which is used to reduce heat loss in your home. It works by filling the gap in between the bricks in your walls. This reduces the transfer of heat from within your home to the outside. Over a third of the heat from your home escapes through your outer walls. So installing wall insulation can mean substantial savings on energy costs.
Is cavity wall insulation suitable for your home?
Properties in Scotland built before the 1920’s have solid brick or stone walls. If your home was built after this is a good chance it have a cavity in between the bricks of your outer walls. Scottish homes built with solid walls during this period are in a minority. Our surveyors can confirm this by drilling a small hole in your wall and looking inside with specialized equipment..
Your house will usually be suitable for cavity wall insulation if:
- your external walls are unfilled cavity walls
- your cavity is at least 50mm wide
- the masonry is in good condition
- it was built after the 1920’s
Why you should insulate your home
Cavity wall insulation stops heat escaping out through the walls of your home. Around 35% of heat in the average home in Scotland and the UK is lost through the outer walls of the house. A further 25% escapes through your loft and roof.

How do I get Free Wall Insulation?
Getting a free insulation grant in Scotland and the UK is a straightforward process. You can arrange an appointment with an authorised Energy Grants Surveyor by entering your details in the Insulation Grant Enquiry Form opposite.
A certified and approved insulation surveyor will then contact you to arrange a cavity wall survey. This involves drilling a small hole in your external wall and looking inside with a boroscope to see if your walls have a cavity and if they already have insulation.
The surveyor will then fill out a grant application and the cavity wall insulation company will then come and fill your walls.

Is my home suitable for cavity wall insulation?
If your house was built between the 1920’s and the 1990’s it is likely that your exterior walls have a double skin of bricks with have a cavity, or gap, between them. Houses built before this period were built with solid stone. Any residential properties built lkater than ths are likely to have insulation already installed.
If your home was constructed using solid walls, or has a timber frame, it is not suitable for cavity wall insulation.
What material is used to insulate walls?
There are three main types of materials used to insulate walls. Polystyrene beads, mineral wool fibre and foam insulant. Although all three are manufactured to British building standards foam is rarely used now to insulate residential properties.
How can I tell if my walls have a cavity?
You can tell the type of walls you have either by measuring the thickness of the wall near the door. If it is 260mm or more then you probably have a cavity. Another way is to look at the pattern of the bricks on your walls. The diagram below shows how cavity walls have a regular brick pattern so as to leave a gap in between the brick leafs. Solid walls have an alternative pattern as no space is required in between the bricks.
How is the work carried out?
The installation process is much easier than you you think. An average three bedroomed semi detached house can be insulated in around three hours. The stages involved are as follows
An approved surveyor will have visited you in your home before the work starts to take some measurements and photographs. They will then draw a plan for the installation team which includes the location of your doors and windows and any health and safety concerns.
Drilling the holes
A series of small holes are drilled in the mortar between your bricks (less than 1 inch in diameter). This is where the insulation will be blown into your walls.
Blowing the insulant
Insulation is then blown through the holes in your walls until they are completely full.
When the insulation has been blown into your walls the team will then carry out checks inside and outside your property. The holes will be filled with matching mortar and the work area cleaned to a high standard.
When you are happy with the installation you will be asked to “sign off” the install. The work comes with a 25 year CIGA guarantee, which you will receive shortly after completion.
